Life Itself Nominated for 5 Cinema Eye Honors

The Cinema Eye Honors have nominated Life Itself for five awards, including Outstanding Nonfiction Feature of the year.

The film was also nominated for Best Direction (Steve James), Best Editing (Steve James and David E. Simpson), Best Score (Joshua Abrams), and the Audience Choice Award. Previously, the Cinema Eye Honors had announced Chaz and Roger Ebert as selections in their "annual list of “The Unforgettables” – this year’s most notable and significant nonfiction film subjects."

Steve James and Life Itself producer Zak Piper previously won two Cinema Eye Honors in 2012 for Outstanding Nonfiction Feature and for Best Direction with The Interrupters.

The Cinema Eye Honors for Nonfiction Filmmaking were founded in late 2007 to recognize and honor exemplary craft and innovation in nonfiction film. Winners of the 8th Annual Cinema Eye Honors will be announced Wednesday, January 7, 2015 in New York City at the Museum of the Moving Image. Life Itself is still on release via Magnolia Pictures in select theaters in the US and Canada, and on iTunes. It's UK theatrical release, via Dogwoof, is November 14. It will be released on DVD and air on CNN in the USA in 2015.

Life Itself wins Best Documentary at American Film Festival in Poland

Life Itself won Best Documentary this weekend at the 5th American Film Festival in Wroclaw, Poland. Audience members voted the film their favorite of the 10 documentaries showing at the festival, which ended on October 26th and was attended by 17,000 viewers.

This week, director Steve James and Chaz Ebert travel to Los Angeles, for screenings hosted by and for members of the International Documentary Association (IDA) and other guilds, and for a double bill of Life Itself and James' classic 2003 film Stevie at the American Cinematheque Aero Theatre on Thursday, October 30th at 7:30pm. On Saturday, November 1st, Chaz and Steve will take the film to the Savannah Film Festival, which The Hollywood Reporter calls a "Must-Stop Destination" for documentary Oscar contenders. Steve will also take part in a Documentary Roundtable Discussion at the festival.

Life Itself continues to screen in select theaters in the US and Canada, and on iTunes. It will screen on November 15th and 16th at DOC NYC as part of the Spotlight section, highlighting the year's best films, with director Steve James attending. It will be released on DVD and air on CNN in the USA in 2015.

The UK theatrical release of Life Itself begins on November 14th, 2014. Ahead of the release, the film's director Steve James will be in the UK to promote the film and for a special preview screening on November 7th. See Dogwoof's website for a full listing of upcoming UK dates.

Michael Moore, founder of the Traverse City Film Festival, gave Life Itself a "Special Award" recognition at the festival this past weekend. See the full list of award winners.

Roger Ebert's widow, Chaz, was attending the festival and accepted the prize on behalf of the filmmakers. Life Itself had previously played two sold-out screenings at the festival.
