The four films selected for the festival span James' career, beginning with Hoop Dreams, his first feature, and ending with his most recent work, Life Itself. Stevie and The Interrupters round out the miniature Steve James retrospective.
The screenings are part of DokuFest 2014's "Focus America" program, which the festival is billing as "a comprehensive look at American documentary landscape." The program is also set to include films by Errol Morris, Barbara Kopple, and Richard Pierce, among other noted American filmmakers.
The retrospective coincides with Life Itself's international festival tour during which the film has played or will play in France, Italy, England, New Zealand, the Czech Republic, Australia, South Africa, Israel, Russia, and Hong Kong, with many more still to come. First released in theaters on July 4th, the acclaimed documentary is currently still playing in over 50 cities in the US and Canada through Magnolia and Video Services Corp, with many more dates to come, and is available on demand and on iTunes. The film is confirmed for a November 14th release in theaters in the United Kingdom, via Dogwoof, and for 2014 theatrical releases in Australia and Italy. Watch this space for more international theatrical, digital and broadcast release date information to come.
